Position Title:                           Program Coordinator – Mann Scholars Program
 
Reports to:                                Program Manager – Mann Scholars Program
Supervisory
Responsibilities:                      No direct reports
Wages:                                      Hourly Range $19 - $21 depending on qualifications
 Part-time Position:                  50 % (20 hours per week)
Appointment Type, Duration: Ongoing/renewable with annual review
 
 Intended Start Date: August 1, 2022
 For 25 years, the Mann Scholars Program has partnered primarily but not exclusively with high school students and families of color in the Madison Metropolitan School District to provide mentoring and educational tools that bring resources to students who show potential for academic achievement but face significant economic and personal challenges in reaching their full potential. With a 100 percent graduation rate, the program has launched 71 Alumni Scholars and currently supports 16 Scholars. Mann Scholars is a program of the Mann Educational Opportunity Fund (MEOF), a 501(c)(3) non-profit entity with the purpose of honoring the late Bernard and Kathlyn Mann, long-time Madisonians, in their conviction that all children deserve an education that will prepare them for responsible, creative, contributing roles in society.

Job Overview: The Mann Scholars Program is looking to hire a part-time Program Coordinator who has a passion for education, students and communities of color, service to others and high achievement. You will play a critical role in helping the Mann Scholars Program achieve its missions and visions by helping our scholars maximize their full potential. The program coordinator will collaborate with the Program Manager working in partnership with Mann Scholar families, MMSD teachers, school counselors, administrators, and community organizations, to design and deliver a comprehensive, coordinated, and customized system of student support for each Scholar within the program. The primary purpose of this team is to create environments that maximize opportunities for learning and ensure that all students develop the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to achieve personal success as a college, career, and community ready individual. 
 
Essential Duties and Responsibilities (Estimated 80% of the role)
 Scholar, Family and Program Support
Engage with a cohort of 6-8 Scholars at 2-3 Madison Metro High Schools
  • Develop open lines of communication to develop relationships between Mann staff, Scholars and their families which could include in person/virtual meetings, email, phone, or text
  • Monitor Scholar’s academic progress and attendance via Infinite Campus.
  • Assist in developing and monitoring academic plans including course selection
  • Schedule and review Scholar’s academic progress with school counselor, the family, and support staff annually at a minimum – more frequently if necessary.
  • Assist in the recruitment and supervision of academic volunteer tutors
  • Assist Scholars in developing a post-secondary plan to be community, college career ready
  • Ensure that Scholars are aware of, and participate in, College Prep activities/tests like: PLAN, PSAT, ACT and SAT 
  • Assist Senior Scholars with College Applications, Scholarship Applications, and the Financial Aid Process.
  • Facilitating discussions with Scholars and their families to effectively administer the disbursement of student scholarship funds
  • Advocate for and support Scholars through potential economic, personal, or academic conflict
  • Connect Scholars to support systems within MMSD and the community.
  • Assist in the coordination of student engagement activities for Scholars and their families: Monthly Student Meetings, Monthly Volunteer Opportunities, Job Shadowing and Career/College Exploration, Financial literacy, Summer Enrichment and Quarterly “Parent Only” meetings
  • Assist in the Mann Scholar Selection Process including a participating role the day of Scholar/Parent Interviews
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of annual events: “Back to School” family picnic, MLK Youth Recognition Breakfast, Mann Scholar Celebration
  • Provide transportation for Mann Scholars for program or school reasons.
  • Attend weekly meetings with Mann Scholars Program Manager to strategize and collaborate about student and program needs
  • Collect and provide academic progress and scholarship expenditures to Program Manager and partners as needed in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Secondary Duties and Responsibilities (Estimated 20% of the role)
 Board, Community and Fundraising Support
  • Attend quarterly Mann Educational Opportunity Fund Board Meetings and assist in the preparation of reports and documents to be presented.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with interested individuals and community groups
  • Assist in the planning and implementation of fundraising activities that could include the annual mailer, grant writing and donor engagement events.
  • Promote Mann Scholars and the program to the Madison area community
  • Other duties as assigned
 
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  • Excellent organizational and communications skills
  • Experience working successfully with ethnically, linguistically, and economically diverse students and families
  • Experience working cross-culturally and/or commitment to work toward improving one's own cultural competence, i.e., valuing difference/diversity, recognizing personal limitations and one's skills and expertise, and having the desire to learn in these areas.
  • Knowledge of career and school planning options to include preparation for post-secondary education and career options
  • Demonstrate critical listening skills, note taking and follow-through
  • Demonstrate the ability to accept constructive feedback and improve
  • Self-starter with the ability to work alone, as a team and in group settings
  • Computer literacy
  
 Minimum Qualifications:
  • Some college or equivalent in work experience
  • Ability to handle changeable demands of community collaborations
  • Access to a vehicle, auto insurance and a valid Wisconsin Driver’s License
  • Ability to engage with people from diverse cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds
  • Access to a personal cell phone for programming use
 
 Desired Qualifications:
  • Associate or bachelor’s degree in education, social sciences, youth development or related field 
  • Knowledge of Madison area non-profit organizations serving youth
  • Experience working with middle/high school students and their families
  • Demonstrated experience in facilitation of groups (parents, students, community groups)
  • Event planning - 1+ years
  • Fundraising - 1+ years
 
Working Conditions:
This will be a remote position based out of the home with the primary work to be carried out on the MMSD high school campuses, student/family homes, or in the community. Candidate should have access to a car, carry auto insurance and have a valid driver’s license. Hours vary including nights and weekends
 
Physical Requirements:
Candidate will be required to travel to individual schools and navigate physical access to all high schools, student homes and various community sites. Employees with disabilities must meet qualification standards that are job-related and consistent with business necessity and must be able to perform the “essential functions” of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation
